Biography
Montréal-based sound artist Steve Bates gives free reign to melodic components and textural dynamics, from leftfield synth work & deconstructed drum machines to pointillist electric guitar and radiostatic blur that swirls around his bruitist signal-bending and field-recording sensibility. Coming out of the anarcho-punk scene of the Canadian Prairies in the 1990s, Bates founded Winnipeg’s experimental sound festival Send + Receive in 1998 before moving to Montréal to become Sound Coordinator at Hexagram (Concordia University), delving further into sonic research and theory, tape-based composition, and installation work.
