The Angelic Process
Biography
The Angelic Process was an American drone metal project formed in Georgia in 1999 by guitarist, vocalist and drummer Kris Angylus. Initially a solo recording project, it became a husband-and-wife duo when bassist and vocalist Monica Dragynfly joined in 2005. Their recordings combined sustained guitar distortion, ambient passages and vocals set deep within the instrumental sound.
Angylus cited Swans, My Bloody Valentine and Neurosis as early influences. Dragynfly also drew on classical music when discussing the group’s layered arrangements and use of extended movements. An early official biography described the music as “Experimental Tribal Drone Swarm.”

The debut release, …And Your Blood Is Full Of Honey, appeared as a limited cassette through Crucial Blast in 2001. Coma Waering followed in 2003 and was reissued by Paradigms Recordings in 2006. Its narrative concerns a man who falls into a coma and eventually dies.
The duo began performing live in January 2006, combining guitar, bass and vocals with prerecorded drums and atmospheric material played from a laptop. Their shorter releases included the EPs Sigh and We All Die Laughing.
Weighing Souls With Sand, released by Profound Lore Records in 2007, continued the narrative of Coma Waering from the perspective of the man’s bereaved wife. It was the final album released during the project’s active years.
Angylus put The Angelic Process on indefinite hold in October 2007 after a serious hand injury prevented him from continuing to perform. He died on April 26, 2008. Dragynfly died on April 1, 2023.
Burning World Records subsequently reissued the band’s recordings. Solipsistic, originally distributed as a promotional CD-R in 2003, received a separate remastered release in 2020. In a 2024 survey for Bandcamp Daily, writer Zoe Camp identified The Angelic Process alongside Jesu and Nadja as early contributors to doomgaze.
