The Gerogerigegege
Biography
The Gerogerigegege (ザ・ゲロゲリゲゲゲ) is a Japanese experimental music project founded in 1985 by Juntaro Yamanouchi (山ノ内純太郎, Yamanouchi Juntarō). The name is derived from Japanese terms for vomiting, diarrhea, and an onomatopoeic expression of disgust.
The project is frequently associated with Japanese harsh noise artists such as Merzbow and Masonna, but it has released works across various styles, including punk rock on "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male", noise on "45 RPM Performance", and ambient music on "None Friendly", "Endless Humiliation", and ">(decrescendo)". Several seven-inch records combine these styles with found recordings. The 1990 album "Tokyo Anal Dynamite" is a 75-track live release incorporating elements of noisecore, noise, and hardcore punk.

While initial coverage was limited due to the extreme sound and explicit content of the material, the project has developed a cult following. Juntaro Yamanouchi also managed the Vis a Vis record label. The project suddenly went on hiatus in 2001, with Yamanouchi seemingly disappearing. "Moenai Hai" was released in 2016, marking the project's return after fifteen years and going on to become one of its most acclaimed and well-known albums. In a now deleted Facebook post on December 14th, 2022, Juntaro stated "I quit my music on December 9. I quit my music on December 9, because the sales of my CDs, which for some reason were selling well, were interfering with Akina's sales", referring to Akina Nakamori, who's music had inspired him to continue living, leaving the project's current status in question.
