Instead of pursuing a career in opera, he entered popular music and achieved his first commercial success in 1971 with "Schöne Maid". An English-language version, "Pretty Maid", was released the following year. "Pretty Maid" reached number 16 on the Australian charts in 1971.
In 1976, Marshall won "Ein Lied für Den Haag" with the song "Der Star", which was intended to represent West Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest. However, he was disqualified less than 24 hours later after it emerged that the song had previously been performed publicly in 1973 by Nizza Thobi. As a result, the Les Humphries Singers replaced him as West Germany's representatives.
In February 2009, Marshall was appointed an Officer of the Order of Tahiti Nui.
Marshall died in Baden-Baden on 16 February 2023, at the age of 85.
