Vesseles
Biography
Vesseles (pronounced "veh-sel-is") is an American symphonic black metal project from Santa Clara, California, formed in 2023. It serves as the creative vessel for multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Valira Pietrangelo, who channels themes of identity dysphoria, misanthropy, occultism, demonhood, and existential alienation. The project blends serrated black metal riffs, haunting orchestral/symphonic elements, piano-driven passages, and raw, ritualistic energy.
Valira Pietrangelo, a West Coast metal veteran with prior involvement in bands like Legion of Grandeur, Among the Torrent, and Arcane Existence, founded Vesseles as a deeply personal outlet. The band’s concept revolves around Valira’s self-identified “demon” persona — a being exiled in the human world, reclaiming power through music drawn from “The Beneath,” a demonic realm. The name “Vesseles” evokes the idea of the body as a vessel for a truer, non-human identity. Lyrics explore transformation, rage, duality, and finding “home” amid disconnection.

Vesseles delivers symphonic black metal with cinematic flair, dissonant riffs, grandiose orchestrations, and emotional depth. Reviews often compare it to Dimmu Borgir and Septicflesh for its atmospheric and symphonic scope, while maintaining raw intensity and personal introspection. It stands out in the genre for its dysphoric, narrative-driven approach rather than pure fantasy or traditional occult tropes.
