Biography
Volubilis is a progressive and technical death metal band from Montréal, Québec, founded in 2020 by multi-instrumentalist and visual storyteller Miguel Marcheterre-Pina. Originally conceived as a solo project during the pandemic, Volubilis gradually evolved into a full band featuring André Dubien on vocals, Jacob Collins on drums, Alexis Rioux on guitar and Shawn Hillman on fretless bass.
Combining intricate guitar work, colossal blast beats, monstrous vocals and sweeping melodic passages, Volubilis create an immersive form of extreme metal that balances technical precision with atmosphere and expansive songwriting. Their sound draws from progressive and technical death metal while incorporating acoustic instrumentation, orchestral textures and a strong emphasis on narrative.

Beyond the music, Volubilis is built around an original science-fiction universe created by Marcheterre-Pina, whose work as an illustrator and writer informs the band's conceptual and visual identity. Their compositions explore cosmic imagery, speculative worlds and existential themes, bringing together music, visual storytelling and world-building into a unified artistic experience.
Following the release of their debut single, “Ashes & Embers,” in 2025, Volubilis unveiled their debut full-length, Theasterion, in July 2026. The six-track concept album presents a technically ambitious and cinematic vision of progressive death metal, further establishing the band's distinctive identity within Montréal's extreme-metal scene.
