Biography

Wannabes were a power pop/post-punk band from Austin, Texas who were active in the 1990s and part of the same music scene that included Sincola, Spoon, Pork, Sixteen Deluxe, and others. Origins for the project can be traced back to 1985 when Hunter Darby (bass, vocals) and Jennings Crawford (guitar, vocals) became friends while attending the same Ft. Worth high school. Guitarist Kevin Carney and drummer Thad Swiderski joined later.

The band recorded their first release, Lucky Pierre, a ten-song demo cassette, in 1990. A 7" entitled Dead True was released in 1992, which landed them a record deal with a Texas label, Dejadisc. They released 2 albums on this label; the first, Mod Flower Cake, in 1994 and the last, Popsucker, in 1995. A compilation of B-sides and such entitled Decade Of Moral Fumbles 1990-1999 was released in 2000 through another Texas label, Plethorazine.
